Honest comparison

Speak vs Suelto: two answers to 'why can't I talk yet?'

The honest one-liner alternative

Speak solves 'you never open your mouth.' Suelto solves 'you open it, and the same flat Spanish comes out.' If you're already speaking but plateaued, read on.

What Speak genuinely does well

  • Voice-first from lesson one. Speak’s real innovation is making you talk immediately — most people’s actual barrier, and few products attack it this directly.
  • Strong beginner path. Structured curriculum first, conversation embedded in it. Beginners get real speaking hours early.
  • Good AI conversation quality and increasingly good feedback on what you say.
  • Focus. A handful of languages done deeply rather than fifty done thinly.

If you’ve never spoken Spanish aloud and the idea makes your throat close, Speak is one of the best fixes on the market. This is not a dismissible competitor; it defined a category.

Where the paths diverge

Speak’s model centres on getting you producing speech. Suelto starts from a different question: once you’re producing, why does the same simplified Spanish keep coming out? That question requires machinery Speak doesn’t claim to have:

  • Avoidance detection. Speak scores what you said. Suelto also tracks what you didn’t say — the structures you quietly route around. At B1+ that’s where the plateau lives.
  • The full skill ladder. Speaking is one rung. Suelto tracks recognition → cue → written → spoken → free use separately, because “I know it” is four different claims.
  • Written vs spoken check. You write the conversation one day and read your own lines aloud the next. Suelto transcribes your speech and shows exactly which phrases made it from the page into your mouth.
  • Peninsular Spanish as the target, not an option. Speak optimises broadly across its languages; dialect register isn’t its battle. Suelto is Peninsular by design — vosotros, register grading, Spain-context scenarios.
  • Your real life as input. Capture a defeat (“couldn’t say receta at the pharmacy”) and it becomes tomorrow’s scenario set in that pharmacy.

Choose Speak instead if…

  • You haven’t started speaking yet and need the friction removed.
  • You’re pre-B1 and want a structured path with lots of talking.
  • Voice quality and polish across languages matters more to you than measurement depth.

Choose Suelto if…

You already speak — hesitantly, simply, functionally — and you can feel the ceiling. You don’t need permission to open your mouth; you need something to notice that por mucho que keeps losing to aunque, and a machine that turns that noticing into tomorrow’s work.

The test

Either way, the gap test costs ten minutes and tells you which problem you actually have: starting to speak, or upgrading what comes out.

UNDERSTAND THE PLATEAU

The comparisons make more sense once you see the plateau they’re built to fix.

Ten minutes will tell you more than this page did.
