The ceiling
Babbel’s model is course-shaped: fixed lessons, fixed exercises, scored responses. Everything in the section above is real; so are these limits once you’re past it:
- Fixed content can’t see you. Every learner gets the same lesson 47. What you personally avoid, what you were never asked, where your written Spanish outruns your spoken — none of that exists in a course authored before you signed up.
- Exercise scoring collapses the skill ladder. Correct answers move you forward whether the knowledge behind them was recognition or production.
- No conversation memory. Speaking practice exists but doesn’t accumulate a model of your errors across months.
- No real-life capture. Yesterday’s pharmacy failure isn’t input to anything; tomorrow’s lesson was decided by the syllabus authors.
These aren’t flaws in Babbel’s execution — they’re properties of courses. A course is a broadcast. Past the intermediate line you need something that listens.
