What ChatGPT genuinely does well

For a self-directed learner who knows exactly what to practice, it’s a remarkable tool. Many people use it as their speaking practice and are right to.
The structural problem: it forgets
Everything a plateaued learner actually needs requires memory across sessions, which a general chat doesn’t have:
- No error model. It corrected your ser/estar mix-up last Tuesday. Today it will let it slide, because it doesn’t know. Your errors don’t compound into a curriculum; they evaporate.
- No avoidance detection. If you route around por mucho que with a simpler construction, ChatGPT sees a correct sentence — because watching for the dodge isn’t what a chat assistant does.
- No coverage map. It can quiz you if you ask, but it has no picture of the 866 structures and functions of Spanish, which ones you’ve met, and which were never probed.
- No schedule. Spaced repetition, modality ladders, when to re-test what wobbled — none of that exists in a chat window. You’d have to manage it yourself, and if you were going to do that, you probably wouldn’t be plateauing.
- No honest signal. A chat feels productive regardless of whether anything was learned. There’s no mirror, no gap, no weekly truth.

Choose ChatGPT instead if…
- You’re disciplined about self-study and just want raw conversation hours.
- You enjoy building your own curriculum — some people do, and GPT is a great instrument.
- You want one subscription for many things, Spanish included.
How they work together
They’re not rivals; they’re different organs. Use ChatGPT for open curiosity — argue about football, draft an email, explore a grammar question at midnight.
